Home / Career Options as a Skin Care Specialist
Are you a little obsessed with skin care? Do you have a drawer full of beloved cleansers, toners, serums and lotions? Are you passionate about helping other people look their best? Well, then a career as a skin care specialist might be the perfect fit for you. Once you’ve gained the skills and knowledge you’ll need through a comprehensive Skin Care Program with an accredited school, you’ll be ready for a future in a range of rewarding careers like the ones below.
As a skin care consultant, you work with clients to help them understand the basics of skin care, analyze skin types, and choose the appropriate products, make-up and treatments to achieve their skin care goals. You may also perform style or image makeovers and offer advice on what works and looks best with their skin.
An esthetician typically works at a spa, salon or resort and specializes in thoroughly cleansing the skin and providing specific skin treatments including facials, hair removal, skin peels, microdermabrasion, light treatments and more. These treatments can also help your clients with specific skin issues such as hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, coarse texture, acne, and aging skin.
Make-artists can make their clients look their best and feel confident. Cosmetic make-up artists may work in salons or spas and show off their skills for wedding parties, fashion shows, photographers, makeovers, and other special events. Theatrical and film make-up artists can not only beautify their subjects but also transform them into different characters, and may also get to use special effects, prosthetics and more to create creatures featured in plays and movies.
Waxing specialists must master various waxing techniques (like strip, hot, Hollywood and Brazilian), be confident, and understand how to distract clients in conversation to make the process as painless as possible. Becoming a waxing specialist can be good for those who enjoy a fast-paced environment, are outgoing, and are comfortable working up close and personal.
A skin care sales representative may work for a specific skin care brand, a store or a product manufacturer. In this role, a person must understand the skin care products they are selling, understand which products work best for which type of skin, and be able to provide customers with product insights and information to help drive sales. You may also sell products directly to estheticians or dermatologists to use in their work and sell directly to their clients.
If you’ve always dreamed of running your own business, becoming a skin care specialist is a great way to get started. You can run your own business offering skilled skin care services – even out of your own home – and eventually expand, get your own shop, and hire other hair stylists, massage therapists, nail techs and others to become a full-service salon or spa. This is a great opportunity to explore the entrepreneur in you!
